On Wednesday, a Pike Co grand jury indicted John Russell Hall on 1 count of murder, 2 counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, 1 count of receiving stolen property and 1 count of persistent felony offender. On Tuesday evening March 13 Police say John Russell Hall opened fire on Pikeville Police Officer Scotty Hamilton in the Hurricane Creek community of Pike Co. The shooting instantly killed Officer Hamilton, who left behind a wife of 5 years and a 9 month old daughter. Following the shooting, several Police agencies spent the next 36 hours or so searching for Hall, before locating him at a home on the Pike/Floyd Co line in the Betsy Layne community. John Russell Hall appeared in court on Friday, March 17 and through his court ordered attorney, entered a not-guilty plea. A judge refused bond for Hall. The case now moves to circuit court and eventually will be scheduled for trial.
