Two Big Sandy Regional Detention Center inmates where quickly re-captured Friday afternoon after they escaped custody while returning from a court date in Lawrence Co. Officials said Steve Meeks and Justin Harless escaped at a gas station off US 23, near W. R. Castle Elementary School, shortly after noon on Friday. A school employee first saw the inmates take off and notified the school’s principal who then put the school immediately on lock-down. Johnson Co Sheriff Dwayne Price said the inmates, who were considered dangerous, had just been in court and were on their way back to jail when they escaped. Steve Meeks was re-captured shortly after Officials received the call that the inmates had escaped and around 4 p.m. the second inmate, Justin Harless was caught not far from the elementary school. Harless was found hiding in the backyard of a home down the street from where he escaped. Both Meeks and Harless have been returned to jail. The Johnson Co. Sheriff’s Office, KSP and Big Sandy Regional Detention Center are investigating this incident.
