Fatal Accident on US 23 Near Rt 201 in Johnson Co; Coal Truck and Pick-Up Involved
Several emergency crews, fire dept. and law enforcement were on the scene of a Wednesday afternoon accident on US 23 at the Turner Branch Hill. According to reports from the scene, a coal truck and a pick up truck were involved in the accident that shut all of the SB lanes of US 23 down for nearly an hour while crews attended to the injured. Witnesses near the scene said they spoke with the coal truck driver who said the PU pulled out of Rt 201 onto US 23 SB. The coal truck driver, who's identity has not been released, said he got over into the other lane to avoid the PU and to pass him, but the PU truck all of a sudden swirved into the coal trucks lane and there was nothing the coal truck driver could do to slow down in time breore hitting the PU truck. One of the occupants of the PU truck was flown from the scene to Cabell Huntington ospital with unknown injuries, but they are thought to be of the serious nature. Emergency crews have said the other occupnat of the PU truck did not survive. The names of those involved in this accident have not been released at this time. The Johnson Co. S.O., Paintsville Police Dept, KSP were on the scene, as well as members of W.R. Castle Fire & Rescue and Paintsville EMS. WSIP news hopes to bring you further information as it becomes available.
