Sentencing for 20-year-old Brandon Lee Fitzpatrick of Lawrence Co was announced on Friday in Mingo Co., W.Va. Fitzpatrick pled guilty in December to first-degree murder of former coal company executive Bennett “Ben” Hatfield, who was shot while tending to his wife’s grave at a cemetery in Mingo Co., W.Va in May of 2016. Fitzpatrick was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after he serves fifteen years. He will be credited with time served. Fitzpatrick’s attorney mad a motion Friday to have a second trial, but that motion was denied. Fitzpatrick was also charged with 1st degree robbery and conspiring with 22-year-old Anthony Raheem Arriaga in the murder. Arriaga was found guilty of 1st degree murder and 1st degree robbery in October 2017.
