On the evening of Tuesday, April 17 around 8:30 PM, Paintsville Police Officers were involved with a short pursuit Tuesday evening. According to Captain Jonathan Holbrook, Officer Zach Mitchell was on routine patrol in the 6th Street area when he encountered a Monte Carlo coming toward him, traveling 37 mph in a 15 mph zone. By the time Officer Mitchell got turned around to make a traffic stop, the operator of the Monte Carlo took off at a higher rate of speed up 6th Street. When Mitchell started his pursuit, the operator of the vehicle lost control due to a blown tire. The car then slid out of control, hitting the curve and coming to a final stop just before hitting a tree. Officer Mitchell arrested the man, who has yet to be officially identified to WSIP/WKLW news.
Captain Holbrook said he arrived at the scene just as Officer Mitchell was arresting the man. Holbrook and Mitchell did a search of the car and found several syringes and a Green, leafy substance. The man was said to have active warrants on him, as well as several priors in the area. Captain Holbrook said the man was also combative and appeared to be under the influence. The man was first taken to Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center to get cleared, before being transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. Captain Holbrook said he will be charged with several violations, including Fleeing or evading and DUI (aggravated circumstance). Officer Zach Mitchell is the investigating Officer.
