The Kentucky State Police, Post 9 in Pikeville are continuing to investigate the murders of three people whose bodies were found March 23 on a strip mine site on what is known as Golf Branch, located inside Martin Co near the Martin/Pike Co. line on Ky 292. Investigators say they have collected very good information and leads in the case. The bodies of two deceased males and a female who was still alive were found by some young men who were checking on some cattle. Officials declared Micha Sammons, 20 of Kimper (Pike Co) and Dereck James, 26 of Huddy (Pike Co) dead at the scene. The third person, Amber Lockard (a.k.a. Amber Bates, 31 was still alive, but died a few days later at an area Hospital. A vehicle (2003 Chevy Trail Blazer) belonging to the female was located in Williamson, W.Va. According to KSP Public Affairs Trooper William Petry, he said investigators believe the victims were not random. No arrest have been made at this point in the investigation, but Trooper Petry said the investigation is focused in the Martin/Pike Co areas and law enforcement agencies have been contacted in West Virginia. KSP Post 9 Detective Gary Sykes is the lead investigator in the case.
