According to a news release from the Johnson Co. Sheriff’s Office, on the morning of Thursday, May 10, 2018 at approximately 5:50AM, Johnson County 911/Dispatch received a call of a collision at 8518, KY RT 201 in the Sitka community. Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy J.P. Primm responded. Upon his arrival, Deputy Primm located the operator of the vehicle, Steven W. Layne Jr., age 26, of Sitka. After observing Mr. Layne, Deputy Primm determined that Layne appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicating substance. The owner of the wrecked vehicle informed Deputies that Layne had stolen the vehicle a short time prior to the collision.
A preliminary search of Layne revealed a stolen cell phone, which was one of two cell phones that were reported stolen on May 5th. Layne was charged with Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disp. $500 or more but under $10,000, Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disp. (Auto) – $500 or more but under $10,000, Public Intoxication – Controlled Substance (Excludes Alcohol) and Resisting Arrest. Layne was taken into custody and transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. While conducting a secondary search at the detention center, Layne was found to be in possession of an undisclosed amount of Methamphetamine. Layne was then additionally charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Degree (Methamphetamine) and Promoting Contraband, 1st Degree. Assisting Deputy Primm at the scene was Johnson County Deputy Terry Tussey.
