Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post 09, have opened a death investigation in the Left Fork of Johnson Fork community.
At approximately 8 PM Post 09 Received information of a person being found unresponsive in a creek in the 1000 block of Johnson Fork Road in the Gunlock Community of Magoffin County.
Troopers, responded to the scene along with Magoffin County Sheriff Office, and Magoffin County Rescue. Upon arrival Joseph Smithers (age 33 from the Gunlock area) was discovered deceased in the creek.
The Magoffin County Coroner pronounced Mr. Smithers deceased at the scene. An autopsy is pending for the cause of death.
The case remains open and is under the investigation of Detective Newsome.
Rescue crews in Magoffin County say they received a report of a body found in the Johnson Fork area on Saturday.
The identity of that body is not known; authorities also say they can’t tell if it is that of a man or a woman.
The body was reportedly found near some homes in a wooded area.
