The man accused of murdering three people near the Martin/Pike Co line appeared in court Thursday morning. Lance J. Ward, 28 went before Circuit Judge John David Preston for his alleged involvement in the triple murder that happened on March 23 on a strip mine site on what is known as Golf Branch near the Martin/Pike Co. line on Ky 292. Police said Ward is the person responsible for shooting and killing Derek James age 26, Micha Sammons age 20 and Amber Lockard (a.k.a. Amber Bates) age 31. Ward entered a “not guilty” plea and was appointed a lawyer during Thursday’s appearance. He is being held without bond at the West Virginia Regional Jail and Correctional Facility. A pretrial conference is set for September 20th, 2018.
