The roadway has been reopened.
Original story 7/5/18:
Mary Westfall-Holbrook, Chief District Engineer, Highway District 12, has ordered an immediate emergency shutdown of KY 321 between James S. Trimble Boulevard and Southside Freewill Baptist Church in Paintsville. This is as of 3 o’clock this afternoon, Thursday, July 5.
Again, this is KY 321 – the bypass. The tree is above the rock cliff across the bypass from the Ramada Inn.
Last night’s microburst storm uprooted a huge tree that is hanging precariously over the highway. “I cannot in good conscience put people under this,” Westfall-Holbrook said. “It is just too dangerous.”
She said it should take 24 hours for the tree cutters to dismantle the tree. “They will have to cut from the top and let it fall on the highway,” she explained. “They will start first thing in the morning. As you might imagine, tree cutters are quite busy in Paintsville today.”
The road will be closed to all traffic in both directions until the danger is eliminated. It is estimated that the road should be open sometime Friday late afternoon or early evening. A notice will be posted on KYTC District 12’s Facebook page (KYTC District 12).
