A Martin Co. man who assaulted a Martin Co. Jailer, then stole the Jailer’s car has been arrested after nearly a week on the run. According to Martin Co Sheriff John Kirk, U.S. Marshals found escaped inmate Mark Crouch in Wayne Co., W.Va on Saturday morning. Crouch was being transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center by Deputy Martin Co Jailer Larry Maynard, when Crouch assaulted Maynard and then stole his cruiser. According to the Sheriff Kirk, multiple departments worked together including the U.S. Marshals, Wayne Co Sheriff’s department, the Martin Co Sheriff’s office and even departments in Ohio. Kirk said the US Marshall’s Office assembled a team of about 8 or 9 and went to a location on Silver Creek in Wayne Co., W.Va at around 1 AM Saturday morning, were Crouch was thought to be located and found him, then made the arrest. Crouch was found at a home in the county and he was not alone. Police also arrested another man on warrants.
Sheriff Kirk said the cruiser is still missing. Although Crouch claims to have left the cruiser somewhere on Route 581 in Martin Co, Deputies believe he is lying. Sheriff Kirk says Deputies have searched the 581 area for the missing transport car. Crouch was taken to the South West Regional Jail in West Virginia. He will need to face a extradition hearing before officials can bring him back to Kentucky. Sheriff Kirk said Crouch is also listed as a registered sex offender. He said if anyone finds the missing transport car, Sheriff Kirk asks that you do not touch it. Call local authorities as soon as possible.
