At approximately 9:35pm on Sunday, August 26th, Paintsville-Johnson Co. 911 received a report of a missing 18-year-old male in the Van Lear community. The subject in question had left home around 6:45pm on an ATV and had not been heard from since.

Along with Director Gary McClure and Search & Rescue Coordinator Brian Jeffiers of PJCEM, firefighters from Van Lear and later West Van Lear, Rockhouse, and Williamsport were dispatched to the area along Kentucky Rt. 3 to prepare for the search. After gathering additional information to narrow the search area, teams were deployed to several locations on a large area of reclaimed strip mine.
At approximately 12:30am, a search team located the rider along a road on the mine. 18-year-old Mark Crump had flipped on his ATV and was injured and unable to seek help.
Firefighters and EMS personnel placed Crump in a rescue basket and transported him in an a side-by-side ATV to an ambulance waiting on Rt. 3. He was transported to Highlands Regional Medical Center. The extent of his injuries is unknown. Rescuers cleared the scene around 1:45am.
