Troopers with the Kentucky State Police responded to a welfare check Sunday evening at a home on Highway 3193 in the Wolverine community. The welfare check was on a woman, who family members had expressed concerns about her well-being. When Troopers from Post 13 in Hazard arrived at the home, a man answered the door. After the Troopers explained to the man why they were there, he allegedly went back inside, shut the door, and then fired a gun through the front door at the Troopers. It was reported that KSP Detective Gary Sandlin, also with Post 13, was injured when fragments from the bullet ricocheted and injured him in the face. His injuries were not life-threatening. KSP’s Special Response Team was able to safely remove the woman from the home unharmed. The shooter, identified as Dwayne Robertson, 39, of Jackson, was found dead inside the home with a gunshot wound. It is unclear who caused the deadly wound. Robertson’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy and the investigation is ongoing.
