According to the Johnson Co. Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police, US 23 in Johnson Co. was shut down for nearly 2 hours Tuesday following a deadly two vehicle crash.
Officials said the crash happened around 1:30 PM Tuesday along US 23 in Nippa near C&C Tax and Bookkeeping Services.
Authorities said a Red car and a Pike Co. Sheriff’s cruiser were both traveling in the North-bound lanes of US when the Red car veered into the path of the cruiser.
Officials said there were two people in the Red car and one of those individuals, 90-year-old Betty Jewel Moore of Van Lear, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Johnson Co. Coroner J.R. Frisby.
The other person was transported to the Hospital with serious injuries.
The cruiser was occupied by two Pike Co. Sheriff Deputies, along with one inmate they were transporting.
At this time, Officials have not released information about where the Deputies were transporting the inmate or the condition of the Deputies or the prisoner.
No further information has been released at this time.
Accident re-constructionist have been on scene to try and determine an exact cause of the crash.

The Johnson Co. Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police are jointly investigating this crash.
Members of the W.R. Castle Fire and Rescue, Rockhouse Fire and Rescue, River VFD, Paintsville EMS all responded to this crash scene.
