* The # 2 ranked Univ. of Kentucky men’s basketball team officially got the 2018-2019 college basketball season underway last night in the State Farm Champions Classic in Indianapolis, but it was not the start to the season that many people had predicted. The CATS faced off with the # 4 Duke Blue Devils and Coach K and came away with a very disappointing 118-84 loss. UK was led by Fr. Keldon Johnson’s 23 points, while Sr. graduate transfer Reid Travis had 22 and 7 rebounds and Fr. Tyler Herro had some late buckets to finish with 14 points. Coach John Calipari falls to (1-3) against the Blue Devils and Kentucky starts the season (0-1). The Wildcats will get back to action on Friday night as they will host the Southern Illinois Salukis from Rupp Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 PM on the SEC Network.
* Kentucky men’s basketball players Reid Travis, PJ Washington and Keldon Johnson were three of 50 players selected for the John R. Wooden Award’s Preseason Top 50. Kentucky is one of three programs with three players among the top 50 preseason favorites for the Wooden Award’s Player of the Year trophy. UK’s trio was selected Monday for the 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy, awarded annually to the national player of the year by the Atlanta Tipoff club. Washington and Travis are among 20 players for the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I Player of the Year, and they were also tabbed preseason All-Southeastern Conference First Team by the league’s coaches earlier Tuesday.
